Joan LaVelle Moon

Joan LaVelle Moon, age 73, of Ashdown, Arkansas, passed peacefully at her home August 2, 2023. Joan was born March 31, 1950, in Sweet Home, Oregon, to Gilbert and Jo Whisenhunt Bacorn. Joan was a 1968 graduate of Broken Bow High School. She loved attending her class reunions and visiting with classmates. Joan married the love of her life John Moon, November 18, 1968, in Paris, Texas. Joan was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. Joan and John moved to Ashdown, Arkansas in 1970, where they raised their two children Todd and Teresa. Joan and John operated a poultry farm and ranch in the Ashdown area. Joan loved to sew, garden, cook, care for her animals, camp, collect trinkets, and most of all spend time with family. Joan was a very talented seamstress having fashioned Teresa’s wedding dress, sewing much by hand taking nine months to complete. Joan embroidered, crocheted or quilted many quilts for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Joan’s biggest treasure was her family. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren, going to ball games, dances recitals, band performances or just visiting. She always had the last words when speaking with family; “love you more”. Joan is survived by her husband of 54 years, John Moon; son, Todd and wife Melissa Moon, Ashdown, daughter Teresa and husband Brian Greeson, Ashdown. Three grandchildren, Cortnie and Skylar Parks, Ashdown, Casie and Tanner Young, Ashdown, and Fisher Moon, Texarkana. Two great grandchildren, Lynleigh and Caydie Parks Ashdown. Two brothers, Steven Bacorn, Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Kenneth and Levitia Bacorn, Quinton, Oklahoma, two sisters, Cheryl Davis and Mike Wood, Broken Bow, Oklahoma, and Sharon and Glenn Strawn, Durant, Oklahoma. Special nephew Steve McQueen, of Bald Knob, Arkansas. Numerous other nieces, nephews and family who were all special to her. Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Jo Bacorn, brother-in-law Arvil Davis, sister-in-law Ella Bacorn and great nephew David Bean. Also preceding Joan in death are father and mother in law, Oliver and Vera Moon, brothers in laws, Bobby and Donnie Moon and Russell McQueen; sister in laws Pat Bass and Helen McQueen and nieces Sherry Zeigler, Cindy Moon and Megan Moon, nephew Harvest Moon. Funeral services will be held Saturday August 5, 2023 at 11:00 at the Madden Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Ashdown Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Friday August 4 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. The family would like to express special thanks to Dr. Dean Bowman and his staff, the staff of Enhabit Hospice and Little River Home Health for the care and compassion shown to Joan and the family during her illness.
